Bye bye Binkie

We took Margot's binkie away this week. With this whole new "no sleeping" pattern, the only thing we could figure out was that she was losing her bink in the middle of the night and then getting up and turning the light on to find it. She has had a long relationship with her binks, and really had come to rely on them to soothe herself. Neither one of us likes to see 3 or 4 year old children running around with a pacifier, so we decided it was time. We explained to Margot that she was a big girl and didn't need a bink anymore. She seemed to understand, and gleefully pronounced "I'm a big girl! I don't need a potty seat and I don't need a crib and I don't need a binkie!" Sweet! This is going to be easy!

Um, yeah. Fast forward to bedtime where she cried and pleaded for her binkie and looked so scared I was ready to drive to Target and buy every single pacifier in the store. Ben laid with her until she fell asleep and assured her she was OK, and she did get to sleep. It wasn't a great night and she was up early again rummaging around to try and find a bink, but we made it a night.

The next day, she did not nap. She basically was telling us "Ok you jerks, you want to play hardball? I'll see your binkie and raise you no NAP. HAVE FUN WITH THAT!" I actually think I saw her look at Ben and do a "boo-ya" type dance at him. Again, I was fully prepared to make a trip to Target.

However, over the next few days, Margot seemed to accept that she was not using a bink anymore. She quit talking about it, quit asking for it and looked a bit less nervous at bed time. This morning, she woke up at 6:30 am looking totally refreshed and happy. I don't think I need to tell you how pleased I was to sleep until 6:30!

Hopefully today she will take a nap and then sleep well again tonight. I can forsee a very good weekend coming!

I am so glad you blogged this issue! Elise is only 11 months and I have already been getting 'binkie' comments but I really don't want to fight the battle of the binkie just yet when it is the only thing that gets her back to sleep (not to mention I still haven't even tackled the bottle-to-get-to-sleep issue). Way to go guys ~ you are my heros!

Ya know, the binkie is a hard one! Margot just really took to it and loved it so much we let her hang on for a long time.

I am sure when the time comes Elise will do just fine!!
